A superstar rising…Chappell Roan’s debut album, Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, secured a spot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts this week after almost eight months since its release. It’s no surprise that opening for Olivia Rodrigo has been a catalyst for Roan’s success but let’s take a moment to discuss the seemingly-perfect Midwest Princess’ debut album.

Opening with the phenomenon that is “Femininomenom,” Roan sets the tone for her campy, playful, and unapologetically queer album. The opening track depicts the disappointment of modern-day men, how online love never meets the expectations we anticipate, and Roan’s outward advice that women should date more women -- it’s just more fun.

The playful tagline “Dude, can you play a song with a f*cking beat?” creates the ideal transition between the slower verses and club-like chorus. This track is one of many that Dan Nigro delicately crafted to entice a listener to dance along, its bouncy drum pads and raging synths are irresistibly playful.

Following the fun of  “Femininomenom” is “Red Wine Supernova” -- my favorite from this album. In this song, Chappell very sarcastically expresses the insatiable feeling of a crush while also displaying her vocal prowess and ability to articulate humor through her lyrics.

This track, alongside “Pink Pony Club,” “HOT TO GO!” and “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl” are the party tracks of this album that keep the energy vibrant and high-spirited.

To contrast the playfulness of this album, Roan sprinkles in a few heart-wrenching power ballads. “Coffee” and “California” reflect the artist's versatility as a lyricist and show the vulnerable side of this rising star.

Following closely to “Red Wine Supernova” in my top rankings of this album, is “Casual.” This song is currently gaining traction on TikTok, with over 50 thousand videos made using the track.

If you have ever been on the receiving end of a situationship break-up, I have the perfect song suggestion for you. Roan’s lyrics in this track hit deep but remain light-hearted, perfectly embodying the concept of the song and keeping a relationship “casual.”

Alongside this album are a series of incredible music videos, demonstrating Chappell’s star power and lack of fear in being unapologetically herself. The videos for “Casual” and “My Kink is Karma” are not for the faint of heart.

Check out the album and the coinciding music videos on YouTube and all streaming platforms before Chappell gets her Grammy nomination next year.
